‘Empuraan’ Nears ₹50 Crore Mark in India on Day 3, Faces New Competition from Salman Khan’s ‘Sikandar’

Mohanlal-Prithviraj’s political thriller soars to ₹46 crore in 3 days; set to face Eid weekend box office clash with Salman Khan’s high-octane action film.

Chennai/Thiruvananthapuram, March 30 – Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s high-stakes thriller L2: Empuraan continues its strong box office run, earning ₹13.50 crore on Saturday (Day 3) and bringing its domestic total to ₹46 crore. The film, which opened with a record-breaking ₹21 crore – the highest-ever for a Malayalam film – is now just ₹4 crore away from the coveted ₹50 crore milestone in India.

Despite minor controversies surrounding certain political sequences, Empuraan has been a massive success, both domestically and globally. The film crossed ₹100 crore worldwide within just two days, becoming the fastest Malayalam film to do so. It now joins the elite ₹100 crore club alongside Lucifer, 2018, Manjummel Boys, Puli Murugan, and Aadujeevitham.

The movie’s international performance has also been phenomenal, with record-breaking collections in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the US. However, its box office momentum in the Hindi-speaking belt may now be tested with the arrival of Salman Khan’s Eid release Sikandar.

Helmed by action specialist AR Murugadoss, Sikandar stars Salman Khan and Rashmika Mandanna, and is expected to open with ₹30 crore+ on Sunday. The film marks Salman’s return after Tiger 3 and is being touted as one of the biggest Bollywood releases of all time, hitting 5,500 screens with over 22,000 shows.

Meanwhile, Empuraan is also undergoing changes. Following a political backlash over a sequence referencing the 2002 Gujarat riots, producer Gokulam Gopalan has asked director Prithviraj to make 17 edits to the film. “If any scene or dialogue has hurt sentiments, we are open to changes,” Gopalan said. A revised version is likely to release next week.

As Empuraan continues to rake in the numbers and Sikandar makes its grand entry into cinemas, the box office is all set for a mega Eid weekend showdown.
