'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Breaks Marvel's Box Office Slump with Strong Opening
July 25, 2025: The superhero genre is coming back in a big way. The Fantastic Four: First Steps” from Disney/Marvel Studios is set to be a major blockbuster at the movie office. On Thursday, July 24, 2025, it is expected to make $23 million in previews alone. This impressive statistic, which comes from early industry sources, suggests that the Matt Shakman-directed movie is likely to make more than its initial domestic prediction of $100 million to $110 million for the opening weekend.
Record-Breaking Previews and Positive Reviews from Critics
“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” had the best preview numbers for an MCU movie thus far this year. It defeated “Thunderbolts*” ($11.5M) by more than double and “Captain America: Brave New World” ($12M) by 92%. This is the 12th time that an MCU movie has had previews that made more than $20 million. “Avengers: Endgame” still holds the record for the most previews in the US, at $60 million.
The 1960s movie about the future had largely favorable reviews. Critics gave it an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and viewers gave it a 92% score. These ratings are close to those of “Thunderbolts” (88% critic/93% audience) and far higher than those of “Deadpool & Wolverine” (78% critic).
On social media, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is also breaking records. It is the first movie of the year to get a billion views on TikTok, Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube. This is better than “Jurassic World Rebirth” (921M) and “Superman” (953M), putting it in a tiny group alongside “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (1.2 billion) and “Deadpool & Wolverine” (1.15 billion).
RelishMix, a company that looks at social media, says that the huge reach is because of a “fully social and nearly completely activated” group that includes Pedro Pascal (11.4 million followers), Joseph Quinn (5.6 million), Vanessa Kirby (2.6 million), and Julia Garner (1.5 million), especially after the red carpet premiere.
Fans are mainly saying wonderful things, and they’re getting more and more enthused about Marvel’s transition into the ’60s retro-futurist setting and the promise of a new chapter for the comic universe. People stated things like, “Setting it in the ’60s was a good idea.” “This looks better than the last Fantastic Four movies” and “This is maybe the first Marvel movie I’m really excited for—can’t wait to see it” reveal that a lot of people are eagerly looking forward to it. People are particularly excited about the movie’s unique appeal and the debut of the villain Galactus (“Galactus is Coming this movie is about to be Fantastic!”).
The $23 million preview number for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is very close to the $22.5 million previews for James Gunn’s “Superman” two Thursdays ago. This could suggest that the next MCU movie will have a great opening weekend.
