Farah Khan Recalls Her Mother-in-Law’s Demand to Manually Grind Spices: “Who Has So Much Time?”
April 6, 2025: Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan recently opened up about her early marriage days and the cultural adjustments she had to make after marrying filmmaker Shirish Kunder in 2004. In her new food vlog episode, Farah visited TV star Karishma Tanna, who is also married into a South Indian family, and reflected on her own culinary challenges with her mother-in-law.
While cooking alongside Karishma, Farah shared a moment from her newlywed life: “Once my mother-in-law told me, ‘Grind these masalas using grinding stones.’ I was like, ‘Kiske paas itna time hai bhai?’ (Who has so much time?)” Karishma was visibly stunned, while her own South Indian mother-in-law chimed in saying, “Those masalas make food taste good.” Farah wittily replied, “They taste good both ways.”
Farah didn’t stop there. She recalled that her mother-in-law, a Mangalorean, often brought home-cooked delicacies—for her son, not her. “She gets idiyappams, coconut-based chicken, idli chutney… but never for me,” Farah said with a laugh.
On another episode of Celebrity MasterChef, she shared a light-hearted anecdote with guests Hina Khan and her partner Rocky. “Now, she’ll see this and call to say, ‘I don’t give you food because you don’t like it!’”
When asked about her own culinary preferences, Farah admitted her famous roasted chicken wasn’t a hit at home. “They are Mangaloreans, and need coconut in everything,” she said with a grin.
