June 16, 2025: A local filmmaker from Ahmedabad, Mahesh Kalawadia—also known as Mahesh Jirawala—has been reported missing following the devastating Air India plane crash on June 12 in Gujarat. While he was not a passenger on the London-bound flight, his last known mobile location was traced to within 700 metres of the crash site, sparking fears he may be among the 29 victims killed on the ground.

Mahesh, a resident of Naroda and director of several music albums, last contacted his wife, Hetal Kalawadia, at 1:14 PM to inform her that a meeting at Law Garden had concluded and he was on his way home. However, he never returned. His phone was later found to be switched off around 1:40 PM—just a minute after the flight took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

“My husband’s phone has been unreachable since shortly after the crash, and his scooter and mobile phone are also missing. The route indicated by his last phone location is not one he normally takes. Something is wrong,” Hetal said.

In hopes of identifying Mahesh among the ground victims, the family has submitted DNA samples to assist in the identification process. Authorities have stated that many bodies at the site were severely charred, making visual recognition nearly impossible. As of Sunday, 47 crash victims had been identified through DNA testing.
The June 12 tragedy claimed the lives of 241 out of 242 passengers and crew aboard the Air India flight and 29 individuals on the ground, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
