First Look of ‘The Paper’—Spin-Off of ‘The Office’—Revealed, Set to Premiere In September

Washington DC [US], May 13: Fans of The Office have reason to rejoice—NBCUniversal has officially unveiled the first look of ‘The Paper, an upcoming mockumentary series set in the same universe as the beloved workplace sitcom. As per Variety, the new show is slated to premiere in September, with the exact date to be announced soon.

The reveal took place during NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York on Monday. Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, and The Office alumnus Oscar Nunez appeared onstage to introduce the series and tease what fans can expect.

A Return to the Mockumentary World

According to the show’s official logline, The Paper follows the same documentary crew that filmed Dunder Mifflin Scranton. This time, they turn their lenses to a historic Midwestern newspaper, the Toledo Truth-Teller, and its eccentric publisher attempting to breathe new life into it.

A trailer shown during the event reveals Nunez’s character Oscar, now working as an accountant at the newspaper, who is visibly unimpressed by the return of the documentary crew. Impacciatore plays the newspaper’s managing editor, while Gleeson steps in as a bright-eyed new hire with idealistic ambitions.

Cast and Creators

Joining Gleeson, Impacciatore, and Nunez in the ensemble cast are:

  • Chelsea Frei
  • Melvin Gregg
  • Gbemisola Ikumelo
  • Alex Edelman
  • Ramona Young
  • Tim Key

The show is co-created by Greg Daniels, the mind behind the U.S. version of The Office, and Michael Koman. Daniels also reunites with original creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, who serve as executive producers alongside Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas. The series is produced by Universal Television.

Building on a Legacy

The Office remains one of Peacock’s most-watched scripted series, and the new show aims to capture that same workplace absurdity and emotional charm. The Paper was a major highlight among Peacock’s upcoming slate revealed during the presentation.

Whether it will match the cultural impact of The Office remains to be seen, but early signs suggest The Paper is poised to become the next binge-worthy comedy.
