Taking on the iconic roles originally played by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint are Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

The announcement arrived with a message reminiscent of the Hogwarts acceptance letter itself. “Dear Mr. Potter, Miss Granger, and Mr. Weasley: We are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry,” HBO wrote on Instagram. “Please welcome Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley to the HBO Original Series Harry Potter.”

However, shortly after posting, HBO disabled comments on Instagram, likely to manage the flood of reactions. But fans did not stay silent. Across social media platforms, opinions poured in — some supportive, others skeptical.

Many fans praised the casting of Arabella Stanton, saying she looks more like the Hermione from the books than Emma Watson did. Ron’s casting received particularly warm approval, with one user commenting, “Ron is best casting. The others need a recasting,” while another said, “The only one among the three who remotely looks like the character in the book is the guy who will play Ron.”

Dominic McLaughlin as Harry drew mixed but hopeful comparisons to the young Daniel Radcliffe, with one fan writing, “That’s pretty damn close to Daniel Radcliffe when he was a kid at the beginning of the movie series.”

Others took a wait-and-see approach. “They all have a good look, we will have to wait to see how the acting goes,” said one user, while another expressed excitement: “They’re adorable. She (Stanton) has Hermione teeth. Ron is literally how I pictured him when I first read the books.”

The casting process was extensive, with over 30,000 young actors auditioning for the roles. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer/director Mark Mylod released a statement applauding the talent pool and expressing excitement for the new trio. “After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen.”

Filming for the series is set to begin later this year, and fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting the next chapter of the Harry Potter saga — now in fresh new hands.
