April 4, 2025: The Indian film industry is grieving the loss of legendary actor, director, and filmmaker, Manoj Kumar, who passed away at the age of 87 on April 4, 2025. Known for his portrayals of patriotic characters, Kumar, affectionately known as “Bharat Kumar,” breathed his last at 4:03 am at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.

His son, Kunal Goswami, confirmed the sad news and shared that Manoj Kumar’s last rites would be performed on April 5, 2025, at 11 am at Pawan Hans in Vile Parle, Mumbai.

The nation has come together to honor the legendary actor, with leaders from all political parties expressing their condolences.

President Droupadi Murmu paid tribute to Kumar on social media, praising his films for instilling national pride and inspiring generations. She wrote, “His cinema will instil national pride and inspire generations to come.”

BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut also remembered Kumar’s contributions to patriotism through his roles, stating, “The veteran actor was also known as Bharat Kumar. He raised the sentiment of patriotism among the countrymen. The film industry is saddened by the demise of such an artist and prays that his soul rests in peace.”

Politicians from all walks of life shared their grief. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described Kumar as a versatile actor, acknowledging his unforgettable roles in films like Upkaar and Purab Aur Paschim. Singh expressed, “His unforgettable performances in films like ‘Upkaar’, ‘Purab and Paschim’ have enriched our culture and endeared him to people across generations.”

Chief Ministers of Uttarakhand and Rajasthan also mourned his passing. Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said, “His demise is an irreparable loss for the film industry and cinema lovers.

AAP Convenor Arvind Kejriwal expressed his grief by writing, “The news of the demise of famous Bollywood actor Shri Manoj Kumar ji, popularly known as Bharat Kumar, is very sad. He has left an indelible mark on the world of cinema with his amazing acting and patriotism. May God give peace to his soul and give strength to his family and fans to bear this loss.”

While Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma praised Kumar’s impact on Indian cinema and extended condolences to the family.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to the actor’s multifaceted contributions, calling his films “a medium for patriotism and social messages,” while Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal expressed, “He has left an indelible mark on the world of cinema with his amazing acting and patriotism.”

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his sorrow, calling Kumar “an icon of Indian cinema” whose works ignited a sense of national pride. “His films will continue to inspire generations,” PM Modi wrote.

Manoj Kumar’s passing was attributed to cardiogenic shock following an acute myocardial infarction, compounded by decompensated liver cirrhosis. He had been under medical care since February 2025.

Throughout his illustrious career, Kumar was known for his iconic roles in films such as Upkaar, Purab Aur Paschim, and Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, all of which continue to resonate deeply with audiences. His films celebrated values such as patriotism, integrity, and national unity, leaving a lasting impact on the Indian film industry.

Kumar received several prestigious accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015, cementing his place as one of India’s most respected and beloved cinematic figures.

The loss of Manoj Kumar marks the end of an era in Indian cinema. However, his enduring legacy will continue to inspire future generations of filmmakers, actors, and moviegoers alike.
