Good Bad Ugly Box Office Day 1: Ajith’s Film Scores ₹28.5 Cr, Becomes Biggest Tamil Opener of 2025

With an impressive opening day collection, Good Bad Ugly overtakes Vidaamuyarchi and gives Tamil cinema its first major box office success of 2025.

Chennai, April 11 – Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar is back at the top of the box office as his latest release Good Bad Ugly raked in an impressive ₹28.5 crore nett on Day 1, becoming the highest Tamil opener of 2025 so far, according to data from Sacnilk.

The Adhik Ravichandran-directed action drama opened on Thursday to packed houses across Tamil Nadu, clocking nearly 79% overall occupancy, with Chennai theatres alone reporting 95% occupancy across 924 shows. Bengaluru, a key market, also performed well with 54% occupancy across 616 shows.

Bigger Than Vidaamuyarchi

Ajith’s last outing, Vidaamuyarchi, opened at ₹26 crore but fizzled out soon after its February release, finishing with a lifetime total of just ₹80 crore. That film’s disappointing run was attributed to an uncertain release window.

In contrast, Good Bad Ugly has not only outdone Vidaamuyarchi on Day 1, but it also shows signs of strong word-of-mouth, potentially setting up Ajith for a major box office comeback.

Ajith’s Box Office Journey Post-Pandemic

  • Thunivu – ₹122 crore
  • Valimai – ₹106 crore
  • Vidaamuyarchi – ₹80 crore
  • Good Bad Ugly – ₹28.5 crore (Day 1)

Ajith’s latest outing is also significant as Tamil cinema has lacked a breakout hit in 2025. So far, the top grosser of the year is Dragon (₹102 crore lifetime), which started with just ₹6.5 crore.

Competition & Critical Reception

Good Bad Ugly features Trisha Krishnan and boasts a soundtrack by legends Ilaiyaraaja, Vidyasagar, and Anirudh Ravichander. While competing against Mammootty’s Bazooka in select southern markets, Ajith’s film is expected to hold strong over the weekend.

In his review, SCREEN critic Avinash Ramachandran noted:

Good Bad Ugly is a showreel of Ajith’s greatest hits. It works because of sheer fan energy and a filmmaker who wears his admiration for the star on his sleeve.”
