Gunshots Fired at Kapil Sharma’s ‘Kap’s Cafe’ in Surrey, Canada: Police Launch Investigation
A late-night shooting incident rocked Kap’s Cafe, a restaurant owned by Indian comedian Kapil Sharma, in Surrey, British Columbia, early Thursday morning. According to a report by Vancouver Sun, police have launched an investigation after multiple gunshots were fired outside the establishment, which had just opened earlier this week.
The Surrey Police Service (SPS) confirmed that shots were fired at approximately 1:50 a.m. (local time). At the time of the incident, several staff members were inside the restaurant, but no injuries were reported.
As of Thursday morning, at least 10 bullet holes were visible on one of the cafe’s front windows, with another pane completely shattered. The restaurant is located in a mixed-use building that houses retail businesses on the ground level and residential apartments above, raising concern among local residents.
Police officers were seen cordoning off the scene and collecting evidence, while life resumed just across the street with children playing near a daycare centre in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood — now partially sealed off with police tape.
SPS spokesperson Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton acknowledged Indian media reports claiming that a Khalistani separatist had taken responsibility for the shooting. However, he cautioned that the investigation is still in its early stages, and authorities are currently assessing all possible motives.
“Connections to other incidents and potential motives are being examined,” SPS said in an official statement.
Houghton further noted that there is no suspect description at this time, and detectives are actively interviewing witnesses and collecting CCTV footage from the surrounding area. He added,
“Once that’s done, we’ll have a better idea of what happened.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact Surrey Police at 604-599-0502 or reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
This incident has stirred concern among members of the Indian diaspora in Canada, especially amid growing tensions around politically motivated attacks. However, no direct motive has been officially established by the authorities as of yet.
