Hailey Bieber Talks About ‘Annoying’ Comparisons With Selena Gomez

Hailey Bieber opens up on the “made-up story” fans have created in their minds, stating she didn’t “ask” for the continuous celebrity comparisons.

Model and entrepreneur Hailey Bieber has once again spoken out about the constant comparisons and online pitting against her and other celebrities, particularly her husband Justin Bieber’s ex-girlfriend, Selena Gomez.

In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, the Rhode founder described the situation as “always annoying,” emphasizing that she never “asked for” the public drama.

The interview, which came shortly after a major career milestone—the reported $1 billion acquisition of her beauty brand by e.l.f. Beauty—highlighted how personal scrutiny still overshadows professional success.

“It’s always annoying being pitted against other people. I didn’t ask for that. When people want to see you a certain way and they’ve made up a story about you in their minds, it’s not up to you to change that,” Bieber stated.

Not Competitive in Business

Bieber, who competes in the lucrative beauty market, stressed that she feels no competitive pressure from rival brands, including Gomez’s Rare Beauty.

“I think there is space for everybody. I don’t feel competitive with people that I’m not inspired by,” she explained. According to an account from ELLE, a reporter attempting to delve deeper into a comparison with Gomez’s brand was quickly shut down by Bieber’s publicist.

Addressing the Ongoing Narrative

Bieber’s recent comments echo previous, stronger statements she has made on the topic. In a June 2023 interview on Bloomberg Originals’ The Circuit With Emily Chang, she described the comparisons and feud narratives as “vile” and “disgusting.”

She has consistently argued that pitting two women against each other over a man is “awful” and fueled by “twisted and perpetuated narratives.”

Bieber also briefly addressed her marriage with Justin, saying the couple is “both really finding our voices of who we are and, I believe, both really walking authentically in what it is we actually want to be doing.”

The couple, who are parents to a son named Jack Blues, also reiterated their decision in the interview to keep their son’s face private until he is old enough to understand the implications of public exposure.
