Harvey Weinstein Found Guilty in New York Retrial for Sexual Assault

The former Hollywood producer was found guilty on one count of sexual assault after a contentious retrial. The jury cleared him of one charge and is yet to decide on a third.

New York, June 11, 2025 — Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has been convicted on one of three sexual assault charges in a closely watched retrial in Manhattan Criminal Court. The verdict came after five days of tense deliberations among a jury of seven women and five men.

Weinstein, 73, was acquitted on a second count, while jurors have yet to reach a decision on a third charge of rape.

The trial was marked by behind-the-scenes drama, including reports of “playground gossip” among jurors. One juror even asked to be excused, claiming unfairness in deliberations. However, the judge denied the request, emphasizing the juror’s oath and the integrity of the trial.

Background of the Retrial

Weinstein’s initial 2020 conviction — which led to a 23-year prison sentence — was overturned in April 2024 by the New York Court of Appeals. The court ruled 4-3 that testimonies from prior accusers unrelated to the specific charges prejudiced the jury.

The retrial introduced a new accuser, Polish model Kaja Sokola, who alleged Weinstein assaulted her in a Manhattan hotel room in 2006. Although her earlier molestation claim was not part of the retrial charges, the hotel assault formed a key part of the prosecution’s case.

Weinstein has consistently denied all charges, pleading not guilty and claiming the encounters were consensual.

Defense and Public Reaction

In closing arguments, Weinstein’s legal team portrayed him as the victim of manipulation, claiming the accusers used “their youth and charm” to take advantage of him. “He’s the one being abused,” argued defense attorney Arthur Aidala, in remarks that drew widespread criticism.

Weinstein is currently battling cancer and has been appearing in court with a walker. In addition to the New York retrial, he is serving a separate 16-year sentence in California for multiple sex crimes, a conviction he is also appealing.

Despite the partial verdict, today’s decision adds another chapter to the long legal reckoning of the once-powerful producer, whose downfall triggered the global #MeToo movement.
