Harvey Weinstein’s Health Declines, Prompting Transfer to Bellevue Hospital
April 18, 2025: Former film producer Harvey Weinstein, who is currently serving time at Rikers Island, has been temporarily moved to Bellevue Hospital for urgent medical care. The decision was made after Weinstein’s legal team successfully petitioned the court, citing his deteriorating health.
According to reports from TMZ, the move was authorized by a New York judge on Thursday, with a hearing scheduled for April 24 at 2:15 pm ET to review the situation further. Weinstein’s legal team, including attorney Imran Ansari and healthcare consultant Craig Rothfeld, argued that the Rikers Island facility had failed to provide adequate medical attention for his serious health conditions.
Weinstein, who has been incarcerated at Rikers Island, has voiced concerns over the level of medical care he has been receiving, claiming that some of his health conditions have been misdiagnosed. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Weinstein is suffering from a range of severe health issues, including:
The former producer’s legal team argues that these medical concerns are not being properly addressed at Rikers, leading to further physical and psychological distress. Weinstein’s attorneys have also claimed that the healthcare provided at the prison has worsened his health problems, and he has been denied proper care at times.
As part of his ongoing legal battle, Weinstein is reportedly seeking compensation from Bellevue Hospital for what he describes as “horrific” treatment. Weinstein alleges that, following medical procedures, he was released back to jail before he had fully recovered, which he claims aggravated his health issues.
This transfer comes amid Weinstein’s retrial for charges of sexual assault and rape in New York City. Jury selection for the retrial began earlier this week. The retrial follows the overturning of his previous convictions by a court of appeals, which now requires him to face a new trial on the charges he was convicted of in 2020.
Weinstein’s health and legal battles have remained in the public eye since his initial conviction, with many watching closely as his case continues to evolve. His medical condition, alongside his ongoing criminal proceedings, has made him a highly controversial figure in both the entertainment industry and legal circles.
The situation continues to develop, and further updates are expected after the court hearing scheduled for April 24.
