Heeramandi 2 : Sanjay Leela Bhansali Working On Script, ‘Exploring Characters’

Following the global success of Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, creator Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his team have begun writing the sequel, which will shift the saga from the kothas of Lahore to the nascent film industries of Mumbai and Kolkata post-Partition.

November 15, 2025: The stage is being set for the highly anticipated sequel to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut streaming series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. With expectations soaring after the first season’s massive success, the filmmaker is currently deep into the writing process for Heeramandi 2.

Vibhu Puri, one of the show’s writers, confirmed the progress, revealing that the team is meticulously exploring new narratives and character arcs to meet the elevated demand from fans.

Vibhu Puri: “We are currently in the writing stage, exploring the characters and [their] storylines. People had doubted whether the show would work with the current generation… but they embraced the world of Heeramandi.”

From Nawabs to Producers

Bhansali himself has previously revealed the ambitious plot direction for the sequel, which will follow the geographical and political upheaval caused by the Partition of India in 1947.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali: “In Heeramandi 2, the women now come from Lahore to the film world. They leave Lahore after the partition and most of them settle in the Mumbai film industry or Kolkata film industry.”

The central conflict will revolve around the courtesans transitioning their art—their song, dance, and etiquette—from entertaining the Nawabs of Lahore to performing for the film producers of the new era. This journey represents a fresh struggle for survival and dignity in a rapidly changing world.

High Expectations and Huge Responsibility

The first season, which featured an ensemble cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Sanjeeda Sheikh, was a monumental undertaking, taking Bhansali over a year and a half of relentless work after his film Gangubai Kathiawadi.

Bhansali acknowledged the pressure to deliver a worthy sequel, stating, “It takes a lot to make a series. This one has taken a lot… So the responsibility is huge on the series.”

While the writing phase is underway, an official release date for Heeramandi 2 on Netflix remains unannounced. Fans are eager to see which remaining characters, such as Sonakshi Sinha’s Fareedan and Manisha Koirala’s Mallikajaan, will make the challenging move from the diamond bazaar to the dazzling, yet difficult, world of cinema.
