Henry Cavill’s ‘Highlander’ Reboot Moves To Amazon MGM Studios For Release

April 18, 2025: The highly anticipated Highlander reboot, starring Henry Cavill and directed by Chad Stahelski, is shifting studios. The film, originally set with Lionsgate, will now be moving to Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists. Final negotiations are underway for the acquisition of the project, which will still be released in theaters.

The original Highlander film, released in 1986, became a cult classic, starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown. It is a fantasy action-adventure about immortal warriors who battle one another until only one remains, growing stronger with each victory. The film’s tagline, “There can only be one,” became iconic, and the success led to four sequels and three television series.

Under the new deal with Amazon, Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt of UA will produce the reboot, along with Neal H. Moritz and Stahelski’s production company, 87Eleven Entertainment. Michael Fench, who worked on John Wick: Chapter 4, will write the script.

The film has been in the works for some time, with Cavill attached to the project since 2021 and Stahelski on board since 2016. Stahelski, known for his work on the John Wick series, expressed that the Highlander reboot is a challenging project because of its deep mythology. However, he emphasized the desire to make the film fresh and true to the spirit of the original without simply remaking or reinventing it.

In addition to Highlander, Cavill is collaborating with Amazon on its Voltron movie and is working on developing Warhammer 40,000 as a franchise.
