Bollywood mourns the loss of veteran actor-filmmaker Deb Mukherjee, as industry stalwarts, including Hrithik Roshan on crutches, gather to bid farewell.
March 16, 2025: Veteran actor and filmmaker Deb Mukherjee passed away on Friday at the age of 83 after a prolonged illness at his residence in suburban Mumbai. The film industry came together to bid him a final goodbye at Pawan Hans Crematorium, Juhu.

Among those in attendance was actor Hrithik Roshan, who arrived on elbow crutches due to a recent knee injury sustained during rehearsals for a song in his upcoming film, War 2. A statement from his team confirmed, “Hrithik has injured his knee. Though he wasn’t shooting, it happened during dance rehearsals. The doctor has advised him to rest.”
Several Bollywood luminaries, including Kajol, Rani Mukerji, Karan Johar, Jaya Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, and Ranbir Kapoor, also paid their respects to the late actor-filmmaker.

Deb Mukherjee, a stalwart from the Mukherjee-Samarth family, was deeply entrenched in Bollywood’s legacy, with a lineage tracing back over four generations. Born in Kanpur, he was the son of Satidevi, sister to legendary stars Ashok Kumar, Anup Kumar, and Kishore Kumar. His brother, Joy Mukherjee, was a successful actor, while his other brother, Shomu Mukherjee, married Bollywood actress Tanuja, making him the uncle of Kajol and Rani Mukerji.
Deb Mukherjee had two marriages. His daughter Sunita, from his first marriage, is married to director Ashutosh Gowariker, while his son Ayan Mukerji, known for films like Brahmāstra and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, is from his second marriage.
A veteran of Hindi cinema, Deb Mukherjee’s filmography includes Sambandh, Adhikar, Zindagi Zindagi, Haiwan, Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki, Karate, Baaton Baaton Mein, and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, among others. His legacy in the industry remains indelible, and his contribution to Indian cinema will be remembered for generations.
