“I Fell in Love with My Nephew’s Ex”: Damon Wayans Sr. Admits Family Gatherings Got ‘Awkward’
April 7, 2025 | Los Angeles — Comedian and actor Damon Wayans Sr. is no stranger to making headlines — but this time, it’s not about a punchline, it’s about family and feelings.
On a candid episode of the Club Shay Shay podcast with Shannon Sharpe, the 63-year-old actor revealed that he once dated his nephew’s ex-girlfriend — and even fell in love with her.

💬 “I got divorced and I was by myself for two years. Then I saw [her] and I was just like, ‘Oh my God. I’m in love,’” Wayans Sr. recalled.
The romance bloomed in 2001, shortly after Damon’s divorce from Lisa Thorner, his wife of 16 years. But the twist came when he later discovered the woman had dated his nephew.

💬 “I called him and told him, and he said, ‘That’s you,’” Damon recounted. With a laugh, he added, “Pass the Courvoisier — let’s go!”
When Sharpe argued that family members’ exes should be “off-limits,” Damon pushed back.
“You know how small the dating pool is out here in Cali?” Wayans Sr. quipped. “You’re bound to bump into someone’s ex.”
He compared his situation to the infamous Jackson 5 drama — a reference to Jermaine Jackson marrying his brother Randy’s ex, Alejandra Oaziaza.
Though he didn’t name his nephew, the Wayans family is famously large and tight-knit. Damon Sr. is one of ten siblings, including Marlon, Shawn, and Keenan Ivory Wayans.
Despite the drama, Wayans Sr. remains close to his family — personally and professionally.
In a recent interview with People, he explained why he prefers to collaborate with his siblings and kids (like actor Damon Wayans Jr.) on screen.
“The thing that takes actors years to develop — we have that automatically. Chemistry and trust.”
