Legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle left behind a deeply philosophical final note with her last released track, “The Shadowy Light,” which came out in March 2026—just weeks before her passing at the age of 92.
The song is part of British virtual band Gorillaz’s India-inspired album “The Mountain (Parvat),” marking a unique cross-cultural collaboration in the closing chapter of her extraordinary career.
A fusion of cultures and sounds
“The Shadowy Light” blends Indian classical music with experimental alt-pop. The track features contributions from Gruff Rhys, flautist Ajay Prasanna, and renowned sarod players Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash, creating a rich, global musical experience.
A song about life, journey, and moksha
Speaking about the song at the time of its release, Asha Bhosle described it as a reflection of her life’s journey. Inspired by her visit to Varanasi and the sacred Ganges, she explained how the song symbolises the passage of life—from birth and relationships to her devotion to music.
In her words, crossing the river in the song represents the completion of life’s journey. She expressed that she would “attain moksha” and “become one of the sounds” that together form a timeless melody—an idea that now resonates even more deeply after her passing.
A legendary career comes full circle
Asha Bhosle passed away in Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital due to multi-organ failure. With a career spanning decades, she recorded thousands of songs across languages and genres, earning honors like the Padma Vibhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. She was also recognized by Guinness World Records as the most-recorded artist in music history.
Her final song now stands not just as music, but as a poetic farewell—one that captures her belief in becoming eternal through sound.
