Mumbai, October 17, 2024: Shah Rukh Khan’s Devdas, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic masterpieces. Twenty-two years after its release, the film continues to captivate audiences with its unforgettable performances, mesmerizing music, and lavish sets. Recently, in an interview at the 77th Locarno Film Festival, Shah Rukh shared personal anecdotes from his time on the set of Devdas and revealed how deeply the role affected him.
SRK disclosed that he resorted to method acting for the role of Devdas, even turning to alcohol to embody the character’s struggles. Reflecting on this, he said, “Well, I got the Best Actor award. It might have helped, but I started drinking after the film and that’s one downside to it.”
He also explained how he approached the character of Devdas, aiming for complexity and ambiguity. “I didn’t want you to feel love for him, but I didn’t want you to hate him. Nor did I want you to like him for being an alcoholic who runs away from every girl that he falls in love with. I just wanted him to appear indescribable,” SRK shared, offering insight into his portrayal of the tragic hero.
Despite receiving advice from veteran actors to avoid the role, SRK decided to take on Devdas as a tribute to his late mother. “For some reason, I always felt if I make films which are very big, my mom and dad could see them from heaven. It’s a childish thought, but I still think my mom’s a star. I even know the star she is,” he revealed, adding a heartfelt reason behind his decision.
With stellar performances by Shah Rukh as Devdas, Aishwarya Rai as Paro, and Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi, the film continues to tug at the heartstrings of audiences. The supporting cast, including Kirron Kher, Jackie Shroff, Smita Jaykar, and Jaya Bhattacharya, also delivered powerful performances that helped solidify Devdas as a timeless classic.
