The actor opens up about the ongoing nepotism debate in Bollywood, saying talent and perseverance define an artist—not lineage.

Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, who hails from a family deeply rooted in the Indian entertainment industry, has added his voice to the ongoing nepotism debate in Bollywood, emphasizing that success ultimately comes down to talent, not lineage.
Speaking to media, Neil said:
“If there was any benefit of nepotism, then today I would have been somewhere else.”

Neil, who is the son of singer Nitin Mukesh and grandson of legendary playback singer Mukesh, acknowledged his family’s legacy but dismissed the notion that it gave him an easy entry or ride in the industry.
“I am Mukesh ji’s grandson. I am Nitin Mukesh ji’s son. Today I am the third generation, carrying their name. But after every film, I still struggle for the next one.”
He added that being a star kid often brings higher expectations and comparisons, which adds to the pressure rather than removing it.
“Even today, after so many films, I still feel the pressure of what my next project will be. It’s a constant challenge to prove myself.”

The actor also praised self-made talents like Kartik Aaryan, Rajkummar Rao, and Vikrant Massey, saying their rise in Bollywood proves that talent is the key factor.
“I don’t think they have any filmy connections, but look at what a first-class job they’re doing. It’s all about their talent.”
Neil noted that despite coming from a musical lineage, he had to first convince people that “a singer’s son can act.”
He also addressed the broader definition of nepotism, saying:
“If a doctor’s son becomes a doctor, is he a nepo kid too? In our field, the term is just glorified. If my daughter becomes an actor or filmmaker, I can only pass on the craft—not hand her success.”
