Acclaimed filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, known for his soul-stirring narratives like Tamasha and Rockstar, has finally opened up about the unique casting choices for his highly anticipated upcoming film, Main Vaapas Aaunga.

In a recent interview, the director delved into how he assembled an eclectic ensemble featuring veteran Naseeruddin Shah, global star Diljit Dosanjh, and rising talents Vedang Raina and Sharvari Wagh. The romantic drama, which explores a narrative spanning decades, is already generating massive buzz ahead of its mid-year release.
Ali revealed that the anchor of the film—a 95-year-old Sikh gentleman experiencing an emotional upheaval—demanded a “finely calibrated” performance that only an actor of Naseeruddin Shah’s caliber could deliver. Interestingly, this marks a fresh visual for the veteran actor, as Ali noted he couldn’t recall Shah ever playing a turbaned Sikh character before. To bridge the timeline of the story, the director cast Vedang Raina to play the younger version of Shah’s character from 78 years prior, citing Vedang’s “face and charm” as the perfect fit to eventually evolve into the older protagonist.
The filmmaker also shared that his collaboration with Diljit Dosanjh on Chamkila planted the seeds for their reunion. While the story was still taking shape, Ali realized the character was increasingly reflecting Diljit’s authentic persona. For the female lead, Sharvari Wagh was chosen to embody a 1940s-inspired aesthetic. Ali described her role as requiring a look that was “westernized, pristine, yet slightly foreign,” a specific vibe that Sharvari fit perfectly.
Main Vaapas Aaunga is set for a grand theatrical release on June 12, 2026. The film is expected to be a major cinematic event, notably locking horns at the box office with the Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde, and Mrunal Thakur starrer Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. With its cross-generational storyline and a mix of seasoned legends and fresh faces, Imtiaz Ali seems poised to deliver another emotional masterpiece.
