The Academy Award nominations were announced on Thursday by actors Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott.
Directed by Adam J. Graves, Anuja tells the heart-wrenching story of a nine-year-old girl who works in a back-alley garment factory alongside her older sister, Palak. The narrative explores the profound impact of choices on her life and her family’s future.
The film is backed by Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra Jonas and renowned producer Guneet Monga, alongside Mindy Kaling, Suchitra Mattai, and Krushan Naik.
Priyanka Chopra expressed her admiration for the film, stating:
“This beautiful film shines a spotlight on a subject that affects millions of children worldwide, who are faced with the impossible decision between an unseen future and the harsh realities of their present. I am immensely proud to be associated with such a phenomenal and impactful project.”
Guneet Monga, a veteran in championing impactful cinema, said:
“‘Anuja’ is a story of unparalleled courage, a film made with a lot of heart. Director Adam J. Graves delivers a powerful message through an empowered and entertaining lens. It’s an honor to share this journey with such an incredible team and now with Priyanka Chopra Jonas lending her powerful voice to our story.”
For Guneet Monga, this marks her third Oscar nomination. Her previous projects, The Elephant Whisperers and Period: End of Sentence, both secured Academy Awards, cementing her legacy in bringing Indian stories to a global audience.
