Is Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha Rowdy Rathore Sequel Shelved?

Citing a legal roadblock with Disney India, producers Shabinaa Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have scrapped the sequel. They will now transform the script into a fresh, high-octane film with a new lead.

August 21, 2025: Fans of the hit movie Rowdy Rathore from 2012 may have to give up on their expectations for a sequel. Bollywood Hungama reports that Rowdy Rathore 2, which fans have been waiting for for almost three years, has been officially put on hold.

The move is said to have come about because Disney India, which owns some of the original film’s intellectual property rights, is causing a major problem. A source said that producers Shabinaa Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have chosen to scrap the sequel plan completely since Disney “isn’t willing to commit.”

The producers, on the other hand, are not giving up on the script, which was written by V. Vijayendra Prasad, a well-known screenwriter who has worked on hits like Baahubali and RRR. The script will now be turned into a new, independent cop drama that doesn’t have the Rowdy Rathore brand name but still has the same popular appeal as the original.

P.S. Mithran, a well-known Tamil filmmaker known for his work on thrillers like Irumbu Thirai and Sardar, would be the director of the new movie. The movie is supposed to start filming in early 2026, and they are supposedly looking for a younger actor to play the main character. Actor Sidharth Malhotra, who was in talks to be in the sequel, is no longer involved.

Fans are left wondering whether this is the end of the Rowdy Rathore series, but the new development promises a new and exciting action story from some of the best writers in the business.
