“Action films with female leads don’t get greenlit as much as the ones with male leads. That’s known,” said Theron. She pointed out the unfair trend where male actors are repeatedly given chances despite box office flops, while women aren’t afforded the same opportunity. “When women do this and the movie maybe doesn’t hit fully, they don’t necessarily get a chance again,” she added.

Despite the risks, Theron has led some of the most successful action blockbusters in recent years, including Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde, and The Old Guard.
