Is 'Sitaare Zameen Par' A Hit Or Flop? As Aamir Khan film Crosses ₹200 Cr
July 6, 2025: After a challenging phase at the box office with back-to-back failures, Aamir Khan seems to have bounced back triumphantly with Sitaare Zameen Par, which has crossed ₹217.50 crore worldwide in just over two weeks. The emotional drama, directed by RS Prasanna, marks a significant comeback for the superstar, silencing critics and reaffirming his box office dominance.
Following the massive disappointments of Thugs of Hindostan and Laal Singh Chaddha, Sitaare Zameen Par carried immense weight on its shoulders. However, with strong word of mouth and a heartfelt story, the film has not only managed to hold its ground but is also now among 2025’s highest-grossing Hindi films — currently sitting at the fourth spot behind Chhaava, Housefull 5, and Raid 2.
The film is on track to surpass Housefull 5 and enter the top 3 highest-grossing Bollywood films of the year. It has already outperformed the lifetime India collections of Laal Singh Chaddha, Ghajini, and is set to overtake Thugs of Hindostan.
With a production budget of ₹90 crore and total cost (including marketing) under ₹150 crore, Sitaare Zameen Par has already recovered its costs from domestic theatrical collections alone. Trade analysts have declared it a clean hit, with potential to graduate to a superhit or blockbuster in the coming weeks if momentum continues.
One major differentiator for Sitaare Zameen Par has been Aamir Khan’s decision to not sell the film’s OTT rights. In an age where digital rights often contribute heavily to pre-release revenue, Aamir chose exclusivity over quick profits. As a result, the film has seen surging footfalls in theatres, with Saturday jumps of 90-140% — an impressive feat for any film in its third week.
Industry experts suggest that the absence of an OTT release may have helped boost box office figures, as audiences rushed to watch the film knowing it wouldn’t be available on streaming platforms later.
The industry has taken note of Aamir’s strategic comeback, with theatre owners recently honouring him as the “box office ka baap.” If Sitaare Zameen Par continues its upward trend, it could become the highest-grossing film of Aamir’s post-Dangal career.
