Is This Minecraft’s Best-Looking Update Yet?

June 16, 2025: Minecraft Bedrock Edition is about to get a stunning makeover. Mojang Studios has announced the release of its highly anticipated Vibrant Visuals update, set to roll out on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. The announcement came via a new YouTube video on June 14, and fans are already buzzing.

This free update focuses entirely on visual enhancements — think richer lighting, dynamic shadows, biome-specific fog, and immersive atmospheres — all without changing the core gameplay.“Everything we added needed to feel natural, like a true evolution,” said A.J. Fairfield, Mojang’s lead rendering engineer.

A key highlight is Physically Based Rendering (PBR) support, allowing textures to reflect properties like metalness, roughness, and glow, bringing objects to life like never before.“Before, everything was flat color. Now, textures can actually feel different,” explained Jasper Boerstra, the game’s art director.

Biomes also get a facelift, with new lighting and color palettes. Expect deserts to glow in golden tones, icy areas to feel cooler and bluer, and locations like The Pale Garden to showcase glowing flora and moody fog.

The water engine has been completely rebuilt too, featuring realistic caustics and reflections. “A lot of care went into getting the water just right,” shared software engineer Sam Hallam.

The update will be enabled by default on supported Bedrock Edition devices and can be toggled in video settings — no mods or tweaks needed.

While Java Edition won’t receive the update just yet, Mojang confirmed that development is underway. Early test builds already include atmospheric fog and infinite clouds.“We want to build a strong visual foundation the community can build on,” said Dejan Dimic, head of the Vibrant Visuals team.

This update arrives at a time when Minecraft’s world is expanding far beyond blocks and biomes. Characters like Steve are racing into Sonic Racing Crossworlds, and a live-action movie is currently in production.
