It takes lot of hard work to make a film: Divya Khossla on ‘Emergency’ row

The Kangana Ranaut-starrer Emergency has been at the center of controversy as it faces multiple challenges ahead of its release. From backlash by several Sikh groups to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) withholding its certification, the film has encountered significant obstacles. Amidst these controversies, actor and director Divya Khosla Kumar has come forward to express her support for Kangana Ranaut and her work on the film.

Divya Khosla Kumar acknowledged the difficulties involved in making a film, particularly one as ambitious as Emergency. “I think it takes a lot of hard work to make a film. It’s not an easy job. Kangana has acted and directed the film. So, hats off to her,” she said, applauding Kangana’s dual role as both lead actress and director.

Emergency is a biographical political thriller that delves into the life of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who imposed a 21-month emergency period from 1975 to 1977. In the film, Kangana essays the role of Indira Gandhi, supported by a stellar cast that includes the late Satish Kaushik, Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Mahima Chaudhry.

On Friday, Kangana Ranaut took to social media to address the ongoing issues surrounding the film’s certification. In a video post, she revealed that the CBFC has not yet issued a certification for Emergency, despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise. “There are rumours that our film Emergency has got a censor certificate. It is not true. In fact, our film was cleared earlier but its certification has been stopped because of several threats,” Kangana stated.

She further explained the pressure being placed on the filmmakers to remove certain scenes, including the assassination of Indira Gandhi and the depiction of the Punjab riots. “Now, I don’t know what else to show. What are we supposed to do—blackout the film during these scenes? This is unbelievable to me, and I am deeply sorry for the current state of thinking in this country,” she added.

Emergency, produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, is set against the backdrop of one of India’s most tumultuous political periods and promises to be a gripping portrayal of historical events. Despite the ongoing controversies, the film is scheduled for release on September 6, 2024.
