May 8, 2025: J.K. Rowling has addressed the online debate surrounding the casting of British actor Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television reboot. Essiedu’s selection for the iconic role ignited conversation not just because of the character’s legacy, but also due to the actor’s public support of trans rights—a position that some believed might clash with Rowling’s known views on gender identity.
The controversy stems from Essiedu’s signature on an open letter criticizing a UK Supreme Court ruling in For Women Scotland v. The Scottish Ministers, which reinforced that legal gender is defined by biological sex. The decision has raised concerns among LGBTQ+ advocates about its impact on access to single-sex spaces for trans individuals.
Essiedu joined over 1,500 entertainment industry professionals, including Emma Watson, Bella Ramsey, Nicola Coughlan, and Joe Alwyn, in signing the letter titled An Open Letter to Film and Television Industry Professionals and Cultural Bodies. The letter expressed solidarity with trans, non-binary, and intersex communities, urging the industry to stand against the implications of the court ruling.

As speculation mounted on social media about whether Rowling would oppose Essiedu’s involvement in the Harry Potter series due to ideological differences, the author responded on X (formerly Twitter). Sharing a news article on the situation, she stated, “I don’t have the power to sack an actor from the series and I wouldn’t exercise it if I did. I don’t believe in taking away people’s jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine.”
Her comment came amid intense public scrutiny, given her past statements on gender and sex, which have divided fans and reignited debates about inclusivity within the Harry Potter universe.
