RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat says honouring Savarkar would enhance the prestige of the award
February 8, 2026: Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff on Saturday reacted to questions on whether freedom fighter Veer Savarkar should be awarded the Bharat Ratna, saying the decision rests with the authorities. Speaking to reporters, Shroff maintained a measured stance, stating that those who truly deserve the country’s highest civilian honour should receive it. When pressed further, he reiterated that such matters are best left to senior decision-makers.
The issue was also addressed by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, who remarked that he was not part of the committee responsible for deciding Bharat Ratna recipients. However, he added that if Veer Savarkar were conferred the honour, it would only elevate the prestige of the award. Bhagwat further noted that Savarkar, irrespective of official recognition, already holds a revered place in the hearts of millions.
Bhagwat made these comments during an event in Mumbai marking the centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The two-day programme, titled “100 Years of Sangh Journey: New Horizons”, began on February 7 and concludes on February 8 at the Nehru Centre Auditorium. The event drew several prominent personalities from the film industry, including Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Akshay Kumar and Jackie Shroff, along with filmmakers such as Karan Johar, Subhash Ghai and Nitesh Tiwari.
