James Gunn Confirms Krypto The Superdog To Appear In ‘Superman’

October 16, 2024: Director James Gunn recently revealed that Krypto the Superdog will make his live-action debut in his upcoming Superman movie, set to release next summer.

Gunn made the announcement in celebration of Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, sharing how his own dog, Ozu, inspired Krypto’s role in the film.

Gunn shared a personal story about how Ozu, whom he and his wife adopted from a difficult hoarding situation, initially wreaked havoc in their home. Reflecting on the challenges of caring for Ozu, Gunn wondered how life would be if Ozu had superpowers, which led him to incorporate Krypto into the Superman script. He playfully described Krypto as a “not-so-good-good-boy,” adding a unique twist to the traditional superhero sidekick.

Krypto, originally from Superman’s home planet, Krypton, has appeared in animated DC films and shows, but this will be his first live-action appearance. Fans are excited to see Krypto join the new Man of Steel, played by David Corenswet, in Gunn’s upcoming film. Following this, Krypto is also set to appear alongside Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, directed by Craig Gillespie, which is slated for release in June 2026.

Gunn’s announcement has already sparked excitement, as fans eagerly anticipate how Krypto’s presence will add a new dynamic to the Superman storyline.
