As fans grow restless awaiting The Batman Part II, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn urges patience, emphasizing Matt Reeves’ creative process and reiterating the franchise’s continued importance.
More than three years since The Batman captivated audiences, anticipation for its sequel remains high—but so does the pressure on filmmaker Matt Reeves. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn reaffirmed that Reeves’ Batman universe remains a cornerstone of the DC slate. However, Gunn didn’t hold back when addressing fans’ growing impatience over the lack of updates, saying he’s “irritated” by the entitlement surrounding the awaited screenplay for The Batman Part II.

In the ever-expanding world of superhero cinema, few films have inspired as much intense anticipation as The Batman Part II. Directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson, the sequel to the gritty 2022 noir hit is still in development, and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn is calling for calm amid mounting fan pressure.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gunn made it clear that the Batman franchise remains a key piece of the DC puzzle. “Listen, we’re supposed to get a script in June,” Gunn revealed. “I hope that happens. We feel really good about it. Matt’s excited. I talk to Matt all the time. I’m totally excited about it. So we can’t wait to read the scripts, but we haven’t read it yet, if that’s your question.”
Gunn, however, was far less diplomatic when addressing the online clamoring and speculation. “People should get off Matt’s nuts,” he stated bluntly. “Let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs. That’s just the way it is. He doesn’t owe you something because you liked his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”
Although Reeves doesn’t let the online noise get to him, Gunn admitted the backlash has irritated him. “It’s just that thing people don’t need to be entitled about,” he said. “It’s going to come out when he feels good about the screenplay. And Matt’s not going to give me the screenplay until he feels good about the screenplay.”
The pressure comes as Reeves continues developing his separate “Batman Epic Crime Saga,” which exists outside of Gunn’s new DC Universe. Gunn’s own reboot, Superman, will premiere July 11 and mark the official launch of DCU’s “Gods and Monsters” chapter, operating independently from Reeves’ darker Gotham storyline.
The Batman Part II, originally slated for 2025, was pushed to October 1, 2027, amid ongoing writing and production delays. Reeves, in a January interview with Deadline, confirmed that the story will be a continuation of the first film, but one that could still surprise audiences. “We’re doing something where the story continues from, but I hope that people will be surprised by,” he said.
Robert Pattinson, who returns as the brooding caped crusader, had confirmed that shooting is expected to begin by the end of 2025. However, he couldn’t resist joking about the delay. “I started out as young Batman and I’m going to be f—ing old Batman by the sequel… I’m 38, I’m old,” he quipped.
Fans may be frustrated, but both Reeves and Gunn remain committed to delivering a sequel that lives up to the legacy of the original. With the screenplay due soon and filming set to begin within the year, the next chapter in Gotham’s darkest saga may yet be worth the wait.
