James Gunn Unveils First ‘Supergirl’ LOOK After Superman’s Blockbuster Success

July 17, 2025: The DC Universe is expanding its Kryptonian legacy, and fans just got their first official look at Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The upcoming film, set to release on June 26, 2026, stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, and promises a grittier, more unpredictable heroine than fans may expect.

The teaser poster, revealed by James Gunn on social media, has already sent shockwaves across the fanbase. Featuring the House of El symbol spray-painted in red against a mural-like backdrop, the poster swaps Superman’s hopeful “LOOK UP” tagline for a more cautionary phrase: “LOOK OUT.”

A Supergirl Like No Other

Though Milly Alcock’s face is hidden in the poster, her full costume is on display — a striking mix of DC Comics tradition and gritty realism. Her look includes the iconic red skirt and boots, the House of El crest, and a rugged brown trench coat, giving off a roguish, battle-worn vibe. The design takes cues from Tom King’s acclaimed Woman of Tomorrow comic arc, known for its deeper emotional and psychological take on Supergirl.

What We Know About the Film

Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella), Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is the next big installment in James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe. Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El made her first surprise appearance in the closing moments of Superman (2025), where she stumbled into the Fortress of Solitude after partying on red-sun planets — hinting at a very different Kryptonian upbringing.

Rather than mirroring Superman’s calm and idealistic persona, Supergirl is being set up as a wildcard — powerful, impulsive, and possibly dangerous. Her presence doesn’t inspire hope; it demands caution. Gunn’s creative decision to flip Superman’s iconic slogan from “Look Up” to “Look Out” underlines the tonal shift.

The Future of the DCU

As James Gunn and Peter Safran continue to shape the DC Universe’s new direction, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is emerging as a cornerstone character — one that could stand in contrast to David Corenswet’s Superman while helping explore the darker, more complex side of Kryptonian legacy.

With less than a year until release, fans are bracing for what could be one of the boldest reinterpretations of Supergirl yet.
