March 18, 2025: Six-time Grammy-winning musician James Taylor’s iconic songs will be featured in a new project titled Fire & Rain, which has been written by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy Letts. Directed by Tony Award-winning David Cromer, the musical is still in its early development stages, with no confirmed production timeline as of yet.
The title Fire & Rain is inspired by Taylor’s famous song of the same name, which was released in 1970 as part of his second album, Sweet Baby James. The song reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, solidifying Taylor’s place in music history. Alongside “Fire and Rain,” Taylor’s other beloved hits, such as You’ve Got a Friend and Sweet Baby James, will also make their way into the production.

This project marks the first time Taylor’s catalogue will be prominently featured in a major theatrical production. Although two songs from his album Flag were previously included in the musical Working, this new musical will bring more of his beloved songs to a wider audience.
Fire & Rain will be produced by Gail Berman, Sam Feldman, Michael Gorfaine, and Broadway theatre owner Jimmy Nederlander, with Frank Marshall and Jere Harris on board in association. The musical is expected to combine Taylor’s timeless songs with Letts’ sharp writing, making for an anticipated theatrical experience.
Tracy Letts, known for his powerful work in both theater and film, has written the acclaimed play August: Osage County, along with Killer Joe, Bug, and Superior Donuts. He has won a Tony Award for his portrayal of George in the revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf and appeared in films such as Lady Bird and Little Women.
David Cromer, whose credits include directing Our Town and the Tony Award-winning The Band’s Visit, is helming the direction of Fire & Rain. Cromer is currently directing Good Night, and Good Luck, starring George Clooney, at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theater.
With its legendary music and top-tier creative team, Fire & Rain promises to be a significant and emotional musical experience for theatergoers. Stay tuned for further updates on the project as it continues to develop.
