Madras High Court clears way for fresh CBFC review of Vijay-starrer
February 10, 2026: The long-standing certification hurdle surrounding Jana Nayagan has seen a major breakthrough, with the Madras High Court allowing the film’s producers to withdraw their writ petition against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The move effectively ends the legal standoff and enables the Censor Board to resume the certification process, reviving hopes for the much-awaited Vijay-starrer’s theatrical release.
On Tuesday, the High Court permitted KVN Productions to withdraw its plea and clarified that the CBFC is free to place the film before a Revising Committee for a fresh review. The producers believe stepping away from litigation will help fast-track certification and remove obstacles that have delayed the film for months. With the legal route now closed, the focus has shifted back to the CBFC’s internal review mechanism.
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan was initially cleared by the Examining Committee but later referred to a Revising Committee, triggering a prolonged legal battle. The film’s delay has drawn particular attention as it is touted as Vijay’s final release before his full-time political foray with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Sources say the makers are now optimistic about securing certification soon and announcing a new release date.
