Jannik Sinner Becomes First Italian To Secure Year-End No. 1 Spot In ATP men's Singles Tennis
October 13, 2024: Jannik Sinner has achieved a historic milestone by securing the ATP year-end No. 1 ranking, making him the first Italian to reach this feat.
The 23-year-old accomplished this after his semi-final win at the Shanghai Masters, where he beat Tomas Machac, solidifying his position at the top of the ATP rankings. Sinner initially made history on June 10, 2024, when he became the first Italian, male or female, to reach World No. 1 since the introduction of computerized rankings in 1973. He maintained the No. 1 ranking throughout the season and will end 2024 on top.
Sinner expressed immense pride in this achievement, emphasizing how special it feels to secure the year-end top spot, something he had dreamed of since childhood. He credited his family, friends, and team for helping him reach this pinnacle in his career.
His 2024 season has been extraordinary, featuring victories at both the Australian Open and the US Open, making him only the third man in the Open Era to win his first two Grand Slam titles in the same year, a feat last accomplished by Guillermo Vilas in 1977. He also won six titles this season, including Masters 1000 victories in Miami and Cincinnati, and ATP 500 titles in Rotterdam and Halle.
Sinner’s rise to the top reflects his remarkable consistency and resilience throughout the year, marking him as one of the sport’s brightest stars.
