Jason Momoa To Play DC’s Main Man ‘Lobo’ In ‘Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow’

December 31, 2024: Jason Momoa is officially making the leap from Aquaman to another iconic role in the DC Universe: Lobo, the chaotic and ruthless alien bounty hunter.

This exciting casting news was confirmed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, who shared the announcement on Instagram with an animated image of Momoa as Lobo. Gunn wrote, “Welcome to the #DCU Jason Momoa. @prideofgypsies #Lobo #Supergirl” — a clear sign that Momoa’s transition from Aquaman to Lobo marks an important moment in DC’s revamped universe.

This news comes after years of Momoa expressing his desire to play the character. In fact, in a recent Instagram post, Momoa shared a quote from a press tour for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, where he said, “They called,” confirming that his dream role had finally become a reality. It’s a full-circle moment for the actor, who has always been vocal about his admiration for the character.

Lobo, who made his comic debut in Omega Men No. 3 in 1983, is a blue-skinned, cigar-smoking antihero with superhuman strength, regenerative healing, and a brutal, no-nonsense attitude. Over the years, Lobo has become a fan favorite for his violent, larger-than-life persona, though multiple attempts to bring him to the big screen — including efforts by Guy Ritchie and Brad Peyton (with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson once considered for the role) — never came to fruition. Lobo has also appeared on television in Krypton, portrayed by Emmett J. Scanlan, but this new film appearance in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow marks a huge leap forward for the character.

The casting of Momoa as Lobo is a key part of the DC Universe’s new direction under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. The pair have been making sweeping changes to the franchise, emphasizing continuity while introducing fresh narratives and casting decisions. While Gunn’s DC Universe will feature a fresh take on characters like Superman and Supergirl, this unique move — bringing back a familiar face in a completely new role — highlights the flexibility and creativity that Gunn and Safran are embracing.

Momoa’s tenure as Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe began with a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), followed by a prominent role in Justice League (2017). His solo film Aquaman (2018) was a massive success, grossing over $1 billion worldwide and solidifying him as a major DC star. However, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023) was met with disappointing box office returns ($439 million) and less favorable reviews, which made it clear that the DCEU was entering a new era.

The upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, starring Milly Alcock as the titular heroine, will be part of the first phase of Gunn and Safran’s new DC Universe, alongside a Superman movie set to release in July 2025. Lobo will likely play a significant role in the upcoming film, bringing his brand of chaos to the super-powered world of Supergirl.

Momoa has long expressed his passion for playing Lobo, even saying in past interviews, “I’ve always wanted to play him. Lobo is me. I am him.” With this role, it looks like he’s finally going to bring that vision to life — and fans can’t wait to see how he transforms into the notorious bounty hunter. As for the future of the DCU, the shift in direction, and Momoa’s exciting new role, it’s clear that big changes are on the horizon, and Lobo is sure to be one of the most memorable parts of this new era.
