Jason Statham’s ‘A Working Man’ Surprises Box Office with No. 1 Debut, Dethrones Disney’s ‘Snow White’
Los Angeles, March 31: In a surprise upset at the weekend box office, Jason Statham’s action-packed thriller A Working Man claimed the top spot with $15.2 million in its opening frame, edging out Disney’s live-action Snow White, which tumbled over 66% in its second week.
Directed by Suicide Squad’s David Ayer and produced by Amazon MGM, A Working Man features Statham as a retired military vet who springs into action when his boss’s daughter is kidnapped by human traffickers. While the film received mixed reviews and a solid “B” CinemaScore, it’s a respectable launch — though slightly under the $16 million debut of Ayer and Statham’s previous collaboration, The Beekeeper.
Meanwhile, Disney’s Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, brought in $14.2 million from 4,200 theaters, dropping to second place. After ten days in release, it has grossed $66.8 million domestically and $143.1 million globally, still far from breaking even against its hefty $250+ million production budget, not including marketing. With Warner Bros.’ Minecraft: The Movie looming on the horizon, Snow White faces a tough road ahead.
Faith-based content once again proved its draw as Fathom Events’ The Chosen: Last Supper opened in third place with $11.5 million across 2,235 cinemas — exceeding expectations for a limited-run event tied to the fifth season of the hit streaming series.
In fourth was Universal and Blumhouse’s horror thriller The Woman in the Yard, which earned $9.4 million from 2,842 theaters. Despite a promising premise and star Danielle Deadwyler, the film struggled with critics and audiences alike, receiving a disappointing C- CinemaScore and a 39% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Thankfully, its $12 million budget limits the downside.
A24’s quirky horror-comedy Death of a Unicorn rounded out the top five with $5.8 million from 3,050 theaters. Featuring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega as a father-daughter duo caught in mythical mayhem, it marked a step up from A24’s prior theatrical effort, Opus, which earned just $1.8 million.
In limited release, The Friend — a touching drama starring Naomi Watts — opened to strong per-screen averages, earning $66,853 from just two NYC screens. Sony Pictures Classics’ The Penguin Lessons, led by Steve Coogan, opened wider across 1,017 screens and brought in $1.2 million.
Despite a new #1, the overall box office continues to underperform. Ticket sales are currently down 10.9% from 2024 and a concerning 39% behind pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to Comscore.
As the spring movie season unfolds, Hollywood is banking on upcoming tentpoles like Minecraft to revive momentum. For now, though, Statham’s reliable appeal and grassroots hits like The Chosen are leading the charge.
