Javed Akhtar Slams Taliban Law
Lyricist condemns reported provisions on domestic violence
February 22, 2026: Acclaimed lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has strongly criticised reports that the Taliban has formalised provisions permitting domestic violence under certain conditions in Afghanistan. Reacting on X on February 21, Akhtar condemned the reported clauses, alleging that they legalise wife beating without bone fracture and jail women who leave their husband’s home without permission. He urged religious leaders in India to denounce the move, calling the Taliban “uncouth barbaric” and unworthy of credibility or respect.
According to international media reports, the new 90-page criminal code, reportedly signed by Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, outlines punishments related to domestic disputes. The provisions allegedly allow physical assault by a husband under limited circumstances, with penalties applying only in cases of severe injury and a maximum jail term of 15 days. The code also reportedly states that women leaving their marital home without consent could face up to three months’ imprisonment, while relatives offering shelter may also be penalised. Rights groups have described the reported measures as deeply restrictive and harmful to women’s autonomy.
Several Indian public figures echoed Akhtar’s criticism. Actor Swara Bhasker termed the reported law inhumane, while Gauahar Khan and Nandish Sandhu also voiced strong objections. As debate intensifies globally, the controversy has reignited discussions on women’s rights, religious interpretation, and accountability under the Taliban’s rule.
