Photographer Edwin Blanco and agency Backgrid allege JLo used their images for self-promotion without a licensing deal, reviving a recurring copyright issue among celebrities.
Los Angeles, May 21, 2025 – Global pop icon and actor Jennifer Lopez is facing a lawsuit for allegedly sharing paparazzi photos of herself on social media without obtaining permission from the photographer or agency that took them.

According to a report by the BBC, photographer Edwin Blanco and his agency Backgrid are suing Lopez over two images she posted on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). The lawsuit seeks $150,000 in damages per photo, citing copyright infringement.
What Triggered the Lawsuit?
The photos in question show Lopez attending the Amazon MGM Studios and Vanity Fair Party in Los Angeles on the eve of the Golden Globes in January. Dressed in a white gown and faux fur coat, Lopez captioned the post: “GG Weekend Glamour.” The images, once posted, were widely reshared by fans, fashion pages, and media outlets.

The photographer and agency claim that the images were used commercially, not personally—alleging that Lopez leveraged the publicity to promote her brand affiliations, fashion partnerships, and designer endorsements.

From Photos to Courtroom
“Ms Lopez’s unauthorised use of the images is commercial in nature, intended for self-promotion,” the lawsuit reads. “She used the images to spotlight the designer of her clothing and jewellery, leveraging the event’s publicity.”
Backgrid and Blanco also claim they reached out to Lopez’s representatives to secure a usage agreement, but no deal was signed before the images were posted.
Not Her First Legal Photo Tangle
This isn’t the first time JLo has been pulled into legal trouble over photo-sharing. She faced similar lawsuits in 2019 and 2020. Other celebrities including Dua Lipa, Gigi Hadid, and Khloe Kardashian have also been sued by paparazzi agencies for sharing professional photos of themselves without proper licensing—highlighting a recurring legal grey area in the influencer and entertainment ecosystem.
