“Imagine Having So Many Terrible Views That Producing Mel Gibson Isn’t the Worst Thing About You”

📍 Oliver takes aim at the DOJ, Mel Gibson, and threats to free speech in fiery ‘Last Week Tonight’ monologue.

🔹 DOJ Attorney Fired Over Gibson Case Sparks Oliver’s Scathing Critique

John Oliver wasted no time tearing into Mel Gibson, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), and ongoing political controversies during the latest episode of Last Week Tonight. His sharp monologue came after reports that DOJ attorney Liz Oyer was seemingly fired for opposing the reinstatement of Gibson’s gun rights, which were revoked following his domestic violence conviction.

Oliver ridiculed Gibson’s long history of scandals, sarcastically describing the actor as being “best known for his work in screaming” and highlighting his damning Wikipedia entry.

🔹 “Check Out His Dad’s Wikipedia Page”

While lambasting Gibson, Oliver took an unexpected detour into his father’s even more troubling legacy.

🗣️ Oliver quipped:
"I recommend you check out his Wikipedia page, and while you’re there, check out his dad’s. Because the opening paragraph alone is spectacular."

He then read a jaw-dropping excerpt about Hutton Gibson, listing his credentials as an American conspiracy theorist, Holocaust denier, advocate of sedevacantism (a belief that no valid Pope has existed since 1958), World War II veteran, and Jeopardy! Grand Champion of 1968.

🗣️ Oliver’s punchline:
"Imagine having so many terrible views that producing Mel Gibson is not the worst thing about you."

🔹 Oliver Slams the Trump Administration’s Free Speech Crackdown

Shifting from Gibson’s controversies, Oliver addressed the arrest of Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil, which the ACLU has condemned as “unlawful.” Trump’s claim that the arrest was aimed at cracking down on antisemitism didn’t sit well with Oliver, who called the explanation “pretty rich.”

🗣️ Oliver highlighted the hypocrisy:
"The top DOD press secretary was recently found to have a history of racist and antisemitic tweets; Musk and JD Vance both recently supported Germany’s AFD, a party with ties to neo-Nazis. And now the administration is making sure that this f—ing guy [Gibson], whose views on the Jews are let’s say a matter of public record, got his guns back."

🔹 “This Should Chill You to the Bone”

Oliver then shifted to a personal note, expressing deep concerns about the implications of Khalil’s deportation.

🗣️ Oliver warned:
"If someone can be deported as a green card holder for speech in support of Palestine or anything else this administration objects to, that should chill you to the bone."

He reflected on his own immigration experience, recalling the fear he felt while navigating the U.S. visa and green card system before becoming a citizen.

🔹 “A F—ing Disgrace”

Oliver closed his segment by calling for an unequivocal public response against the administration’s crackdown on free speech.

🗣️ Oliver’s final statement:
"Rights, like freedom of speech, are a fundamental part of living in this country, and if we do not protect them, then unfortunately—like the Teslas inexplicably for sale on the White House lawn this week—they could be going, going, gone."

🔥 With biting wit and unfiltered critique, Oliver made it clear: The fight for free speech and accountability is far from over.
