Jerry Bruckheimer confirms he’s in talks with the actor about a new ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film, revealing that Depp is willing to come back if he “likes the way the part’s written.”
Los Angeles, US – August 13, 2025: The tide may be turning for the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise. In a move that is sure to thrill fans, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that there’s a strong possibility of Johnny Depp reprising his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow. In a recent interview, Bruckheimer confirmed that he has been in discussions with the actor about a new ‘Pirates’ film and feels “close” to getting a screenplay that could win him over.
“If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it,” Bruckheimer said, emphasizing that for an artist of Depp’s caliber, “it’s all about what’s on the page.” The producer confirmed that work is currently underway on a new screenplay, adding, “We haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re close.”
Bruckheimer has been a staunch supporter of Depp’s return, even as he clarifies that the new film would be a reboot of the franchise. “It’s a reboot, but if it were up to me, he would be in it. I love him. He’s a good friend,” he told Variety. He also gave Depp full credit for creating the beloved character, a blend of Pepe Le Pew and Keith Richards, saying, “That was not on the page; that was his interpretation of Jack Sparrow.”
Depp’s last performance as the legendary pirate was in 2017’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.’ His future with the franchise was left in doubt following his legal troubles and the highly publicized 2022 trial with his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Since then, the actor has been focusing on independent projects outside of the Hollywood studio system.
With the hope of a “right screenplay” on the horizon, it seems the door is open for a triumphant return of the captain who has entertained audiences for two decades.
