Judge Weighs Expert Testimony in Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Trial Amid Shocking Witness Accounts

June 10, 2025: Sean “Diddy” Combs’ ongoing criminal trial in Manhattan may take a crucial turn as Judge Arun Subramanian considers allowing expert testimony on coercive control—a legal and psychological concept often used to explain how victims remain in abusive relationships.

Prosecutors Push for Expert Testimony on Coercive Control

Combs, facing serious charges including sex trafficking, has pleaded not guilty. During the trial, which began in May, prosecutors requested that expert Dr. Hughes be allowed to explain coercive control to the jury. They argue it’s vital for jurors to understand why victims, like key witnesses Jane and Mia, may have stayed in harmful dynamics despite troubling circumstances.

Jane’s Testimony: “I Couldn’t Get Away”

On June 5, Jane—an ex-girlfriend of Combs—gave emotional testimony. She alleged that she was pressured into having sex with male escorts while Combs watched, filmed, and used drugs. “I loved him very deeply,” she said, adding, “I couldn’t get away from the dynamic.”

She described promises of romantic evenings that instead turned into disturbing encounters. She also revealed that Combs still pays her $10,000 monthly rent in Los Angeles, her only income aside from child support. “I don’t want to lose the roof over my head,” she told the court.

Defence Says It Was Voluntary, But Prosecutors Disagree

Combs’ defence team argued that Jane and other accusers were willing participants, dismissing coercion. However, prosecutors countered that abuse isn’t always visible and that expert testimony can explain behaviors that seem contradictory.

Mia, another witness, faced similar scrutiny during cross-examination when asked how she could be “best friends” with someone she claimed abused her. Her reply: “I mean, I guess we can ask my therapist.”

Appeals Court Ruling May Influence Subramanian’s Decision

Prosecutors cited a recent appeals court ruling in another sex trafficking case where Dr. Hughes’ expert insights were deemed “particularly important” in helping jurors interpret victim behavior. This could heavily influence Judge Subramanian’s final ruling on the matter.

If allowed, the testimony could reshape the trial’s trajectory, offering jurors crucial context about coercion, psychological manipulation, and trauma.
