Julia Garner says she is still going to play Madonna in a movie

July 29, 2025: Fans who are excitedly waiting for the Madonna biopic will be happy to hear this: Julia Garner, an American actress who is 31 years old, has confirmed that she is still going to play the famous “Queen of Pop” in the long-awaited movie that Madonna is directing.

Garner, who was last seen in Fantastic Four: First Steps, was on the SmartLess podcast with Sean Hayes, Will Arnett, and Jason Bateman. When asked about the biopic, she simply said, “That’s supposed to still happen.”

Garner, who calls herself a “huge fan of Madonna” and “grew up listening” to her music, talked about how she got the job. “It just happened. “I knew they were working on a project and making a movie about it, so I went out to audition,” she said. She had to rehearse and perform dance sequences for Madonna and sing with the music legend during the audition, which pushed her to her limits. “I just wanted to see if I could do it because I wasn’t a trained dancer. I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I could dance and sing.” “And sing with her,” she remembered.

During the rigorous audition, Garner harnessed Madonna’s confidence to show her strong spirit. “Okay, what would Madonna do? Which is to make you believe that she deserves to be here, and I owned it. I said something like, “You can take it or leave it, but if you leave it, that’s your fault.”

Even though there were allegations in January 2023 that the movie had been canceled, Garner says the biography is still very much alive. She said, “Anything that’s great… takes a long time.” In July 2024, Madonna suggested that she was back to working on the script. She co-wrote it with Diablo Cody and Erin Cress Cressida Wilson. Deadline also said earlier this year that Madonna is working with producer-director Shawn Levy on a new Netflix series centered on her life that is still in the early stages of development.
