The ‘Fast & Furious’ director teams up with Reeves for Netflix’s adaptation of the bestselling comic series, marking a high-octane collaboration.
Los Angeles, March 9 – Justin Lin, the visionary filmmaker behind the Fast & Furious franchise, is set to direct Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Keanu Reeves’ popular comic series, BRZRKR.
Reeves, who co-created the bestselling graphic novel, will not only star in the film but also produce alongside Stephen Christy (Boom! Studios), Stephen Hamel (Company Films), and Ross Richie. Lin will co-produce through his Perfect Storm banner, solidifying a high-profile collaboration between two industry powerhouses.
“BRZRKR is a brutally epic saga about an immortal warrior’s 80,000-year fight through history,” Netflix and Boom! Studios stated. “He’s half-mortal, half-god—cursed and compelled to violence, even at the cost of his sanity.”
A Legacy of Bloodshed and Immortality
The BRZRKR universe centers around a mysterious warrior, known only as ‘B’, who has wandered the Earth for centuries, bound by a violent fate. Desperate for answers about his blood-soaked existence, he agrees to work for the U.S. government, undertaking missions too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, he is promised the ultimate truth—and a way to end his eternal torment.
The script is penned by Mattson Tomlin (The Batman 2), and the film is expected to stay true to Reeves’ original vision, which he developed alongside artist Ron Garney and Eisner-nominated writer Matt Kindt (Mind MGMT).
Since its launch, BRZRKR has become a publishing phenomenon, with the first issue selling over 600,000 copies, making it one of the decade’s best-selling comics. The series has amassed a global sales total of 3.5 million copies, including collected editions and special releases.
A Collaboration Rooted in Mutual Respect
This project marks a full-circle moment for Lin and Reeves, whose professional relationship deepened after Reeves became an angel investor in Lin’s recent indie drama Last Days. The film, which premiered at Sundance 2024, tells the true story of missionary John Allen Chau’s ill-fated journey to an isolated island.
Lin has publicly praised Reeves for his generosity and unwavering support, revealing that the actor stepped in at a critical moment when funding for Last Days was in jeopardy.
“Keanu called out of the blue and said, ‘I heard you’re having some problems. I want to help,’” Lin recalled. “It was so inspirational. He was an angel for our movie.”
BRZRKR Expands Into a Multi-Platform Franchise
Beyond the Netflix live-action film, BRZRKR is also expanding into new mediums:
- A BRZRKR anime series is currently in development, written by Mattson Tomlin.
- A novel titled The Book of Elsewhere, co-written by Reeves and China Miéville, became a New York Times bestseller upon its release in early 2024.
- Merchandise and collectibles are being developed by IMG, expanding the brand’s commercial reach.
Lin’s involvement injects high-octane energy into a project already brimming with star power, action, and mythological depth. With Netflix’s backing and a director known for elevating fast-paced action narratives, BRZRKR is poised to be a blockbuster franchise in the making.
