Kamal Haasan’s ‘Thug Life’ Banned in Karnataka Amid Language Row

June 1, 2025: Kamal Haasan’s upcoming film Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, has landed in a major controversy ahead of its release. A pro-Kannada group, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, attempted to block its screening at Victory Cinema in Kamakshipalya, Bengaluru, following Kamal Haasan’s alleged comments linking Kannada to Tamil.

The organisation, led by Praveen Shetty, warned theatre owners not to release the film, claiming Haasan’s remarks were offensive to the Kannada language. “Kamal Haasan has spoken against Kannada. His movie will not be allowed to release in Karnataka. If it does, the government will be responsible for any consequences,” said Shetty.

The controversy stems from a statement reportedly made by the veteran actor at a promotional event in Chennai, where he allegedly said, “Kannada is born out of Tamil.” The comment sparked widespread protests across Karnataka.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also weighed in, criticising Haasan and stating, “Kannada has a long-standing history. Poor Kamal Haasan, he is unaware of it.”

In response to the backlash, Kamal Haasan defended himself, saying, “It is a democracy. I believe in law and justice. My love for Karnataka is genuine. I have been threatened before. If I’m wrong, I will apologise. If not, I won’t.”

Despite the actor’s statement, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has officially banned the release of Thug Life in Karnataka. KFCC representative Sa Ra Govindu said the decision was made in solidarity with pro-Kannada groups.

“Kamal Haasan has not apologised. Until he does, Thug Life will not be screened in Karnataka,” Govindu stated.

Thug Life also stars Trisha Krishnan and Silambarasan TR, and marks another collaboration between Kamal Haasan and director Mani Ratnam. The film’s release across other states remains unaffected.
