BJP MP Kangana Ranaut defends the civic action against comedian Kunal Kamra amid controversy, drawing a sharp contrast with her own 2020 office demolition under the Uddhav Thackeray regime

March 25, 2025: Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has weighed in on the growing controversy surrounding comedian Kunal Kamra, whose parody video targeting Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde has sparked protests and civic action. Speaking to the media outside Parliament, Kangana stated that while the bulldozer action taken against her in 2020 was “illegal,” the current demolition of Kamra’s studio is “legal.”

Ranaut, who faced partial demolition of her Mumbai office during the Uddhav Thackeray-led government’s tenure, refused to equate the two cases. “What happened to me was illegal. This [action against Kamra] is legal,” she said.

Addressing the backlash against Kamra’s parody of Eknath Shinde, she added, “It’s not okay to insult someone who rose from humble beginnings. You are mocking a man who once drove an auto-rickshaw and is now a Deputy Chief Minister. That deserves respect.”

She continued her criticism of Kamra, questioning his relevance and influence. “What are his credentials? Who are these people who have achieved nothing in life and abuse others in the name of comedy? They mock religious texts, insult women, and then call themselves influencers—for what? Two minutes of fame?”

Kangana also backed CM Devendra Fadnavis’ comments, stating that people must be held accountable for their words and actions.

Kangana vs Shiv Sena: A Look Back

In 2020, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) partially demolished Ranaut’s office in Pali Hill, citing encroachment. The action came soon after her remarks comparing Mumbai to Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, amidst tensions with the Shiv Sena over the Sushant Singh Rajput case. At the time, the Shiv Sena was in power, and Kangana was not affiliated with any political party.

The Bombay High Court later halted the demolition and questioned the BMC’s motivations, ruling in Kangana’s favour.

Now, with Kunal Kamra’s case becoming a flashpoint, comparisons are being drawn with Ranaut’s past, with some accusing the Uddhav Thackeray faction of hypocrisy for supporting Kamra despite their 2020 stand against dissent.
