Kangana Ranaut Reflects on ‘Wrong Choices’ in Directing and Releasing Emergency

“Actor admits regrets about directing the film herself and choosing a theatrical release amid CBFC delays.”

January 9, 2025: Kangana Ranaut has candidly spoken about the challenges and “wrong choices” she made during the production of her first solo directorial venture, Emergency. Slated for release on January 17, the film has been surrounded by controversies, including delays caused by certification issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Kangana on the Delay in Emergency
In an interview with News18, Kangana expressed her apprehensions about the delay in the film’s release. She admitted that opting for a theatrical release instead of streaming was a mistake. “I felt that it was a wrong decision to release it in theatres. I could have secured a better deal on OTT, avoided censorship, and retained the integrity of my film without the CBFC dissecting it,” she said.

The CBFC, which certifies all films for public consumption in India, reportedly took months to approve Emergency, further adding to Kangana’s stress as the release date loomed closer.

On Directing Emergency
Kangana also revealed that she had underestimated the challenges of directing such a politically sensitive film. “Directing this film was a wrong choice,” she admitted. She highlighted the historical precedent of political films like Kissa Kursi Ka, which faced heavy censorship during its time. “I thought I would get away with making a film on Emergency, but I was wrong. Today’s generation will be shocked to see how Indira Gandhi rose to power and became Prime Minister three times. I underestimated the pushback such a story would receive.”
