December 14, 2024: Kangana Ranaut recently shared her perspective on songs themed around drugs, alcohol, and violence during a conversation with Agenda Aaj Tak. In response to whether she would raise this issue in Parliament, the actress emphasised that while artistic expression is free, society also shares a responsibility in addressing harmful habits.

Speaking candidly, Kangana expressed that artistic expression isn’t bound by any specific theme or subject. “Artistic expression is not dependent on anything. Himachal folk music, for example, has many songs based on themes of substance abuse,” she explained. “In art, it’s the emotions that matter. To each their own. However, when it comes to habits like substance abuse, it’s not just the government’s responsibility but also the general public’s.”

Kangana’s comments follow the recent controversy surrounding Diljit Dosanjh’s concert in Hyderabad. The singer faced backlash after performing alcohol-themed songs during his Dil-Luminati Tour. Under pressure from the Telangana government, Diljit altered the lyrics of his popular tracks “Lemonade” and “5 Taara,” replacing references to alcohol with less controversial terms. Despite his abstinence from alcohol, Diljit agreed to stop performing such songs if liquor stores were banned nationwide.

Diljit’s move sparked a debate about the responsibility of artists and the impact of alcohol-themed music on the public, especially as he had to tweak his lyrics in response to government advisories during his performances.
Kangana’s next big project is the highly anticipated political thriller Emergency, where she portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The film, set to release on January 17, 2024, delves into the dramatic events of the 21-month Emergency period declared by Gandhi in the 1970s. The film also stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, and Milind Soman.
