“Kangana Ranaut’s film, highlighting the Emergency and the Bangladesh Liberation War, faces a ban in Bangladesh due to sensitive political dynamics.”

The Reason Behind the Ban

A source close to the matter explained, “The decision to prohibit the screening of ‘Emergency’ in Bangladesh stems from the current strained relations between India and Bangladesh. The ban is not primarily about the content of the film but reflects the broader political dynamics between the two nations.”

The movie explores the pivotal role played by Indira Gandhi during the turbulent period of the Emergency in 1975 and her involvement in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. It highlights her leadership in supporting Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan, a topic believed to have stirred controversy.

Historical Context and Geopolitical Implications

The Bangladesh Liberation War saw India extend significant military and political support to the Bangladeshi independence movement led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, regarded as the Father of Bangladesh. Despite opposition from the USA, India entered the conflict, leading to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The USSR backed India militarily, cementing a lasting partnership that continues to shape geopolitical relations.

The film also delves into sensitive topics, including the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by Bangladeshi extremists. These portrayals are believed to have influenced Bangladesh’s decision to ban the film, as they may reignite contentious debates about its political history.

Current Political Scenario

Bangladesh, once considered India’s key ally in the region under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership, has seen a shift in its political landscape. With Hasina’s departure from office, relations between the two countries have deteriorated, leaving India surrounded by hostile neighbors, including China, Pakistan, and others in the region.
