'Kanguva' Box Office Day 4: Suriya's Fantasy Drama Surges Past ₹53 Crores Despite Mixed Reviews
November 18, 2024: Suriya’s much-anticipated fantasy epic Kanguva continues its strong run at the box office, collecting an impressive ₹53.85 crores in just four days. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics and audiences, the film’s unique visual storytelling and grand cinematic appeal have managed to draw crowds to theaters.
According to Sacnilk, Kanguva earned ₹10.50 crores on its fourth day in India. Opening with a massive ₹24 crores on Day 1, including ₹14.9 crores from Tamil Nadu alone, the film has shown positive momentum despite criticisms. With no significant competition in the coming weeks, industry analysts expect the film to cross the ₹100-crore mark and potentially aim for ₹150 crores.
Amid the mixed reception, actor Jyothika, Suriya’s wife, took to Instagram to voice her support for the film. In a heartfelt post, she lauded the movie’s technical brilliance and bold vision while addressing the criticism.
“I pen this note as Jyothika, a cinema lover, and not as Suriya’s wife. Kanguva is a spectacle in cinema. So proud of you, Suriya, for daring to dream and taking cinema forward. Yes, the first 30 minutes don’t work, and the sound is jarring. But flaws are part of most Indian films, especially when experimenting on this scale,” she wrote.
Jyothika highlighted the positives, such as the captivating women-led action sequences and the emotionally charged narrative arcs. She also questioned the disproportionate negativity aimed at the film, suggesting it felt like an orchestrated effort to undermine it.
“Be proud, Team Kanguva! Those commenting negatively have done nothing to uplift cinema. This film deserves applause for its concept and effort,” she concluded.
While some viewers praised Suriya’s dual-role performance and the film’s visual grandeur, others criticized its pacing and uneven sound design. However, the movie has been acknowledged for pushing the boundaries of Tamil cinema with its ambitious scope.
Directed by Siva, Kanguva also stars Bobby Deol and Disha Patani in pivotal roles. With the absence of major releases on the horizon, the film seems well-positioned to maintain its stronghold at the box office. Fans and industry experts are eager to see if it will achieve its target of ₹150 crores in the coming weeks.
