Karan Johar on Bollywood WhatsApp Gossip: ‘If They Leak, I’ll Have to Move to London’

The filmmaker opens up about the brutally honest and unfiltered conversations within film fraternity groups—conversations too bold for public eyes.

July-1, 2025: Karan Johar, one of Bollywood’s most outspoken voices, recently gave fans a rare peek into the inner workings of the film fraternity’s WhatsApp groups, and the revelations are as hilarious as they are eyebrow-raising.

In a candid conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt for Mojo Story, Johar was asked whether he’d ever consider making a film or writing a book based on the juicy and dramatic exchanges from these private chat groups. Karan’s response? A mix of wit and warning.

“If anyone ever got access to those WhatsApp groups—about me and many of my friends in the fraternity—I think we would have to move to London. We may not be able to continue living in our city,” he joked, drawing laughter from the audience.

Johar admitted that the messages exchanged in these groups are far from filtered. “They are very candid, honest, and sometimes very bchy**,” he said. “We critique everything—fashion, films, performances—you name it. Everyone has strong opinions, and trust me, none of us could ever put those out in public.”

Known for hosting scandalous talk shows and being at the center of industry gossip himself, Karan’s comments confirm what many have long suspected: Bollywood’s elite doesn’t hold back in private.
